Playoff time is here at Delta College as the baseball team gets ready to head down the road toward the California State Championships.

The Mustangs head into the post season with a 23-11 record after a defeat by Sierra College on Tuesday.

According to the Delta College website: “Delta had either the tying or go-ahead run at the plate in the last inning.”

The Mustangs were incapable of scoring as runners were stranded on bases.

Despite the loss, Head Coach Reed Peters said the season went well.

Despite the recent loss to No. 2 ranked Sierra College of Rocklin, Peters is content with his team.

In an email interview, Peters said the team is ranked third in Northern California out of 43 teams.

The top three teams in the league are from the same Big 8 Division. Santa Rosa is first, Sierra is second and Delta is third.

The team is functioning well with its victory over No. 1 ranked Santa Rosa, beating the team twice in a three-game series last week.

Not forgetting the mission, which is to prepare student athletes for a successful academic and athletic transition to a four-year school and into the community, a couple of Delta students have received scholarships, said Peters.

“Our centerfielder Tyler Stieb got a scholarship to Cal State Fullerton and our catcher Jordan Devencenzi has an offer from Neveda Reno,” Peters said.

The team finishes up its regular season Friday with a game versus Modesto. The team is working hard to repeat that 2011 State Championship season.
