Black Friday, not worth it

Black Friday, it’s one of the biggest shopping days of the year for consumers.

Half of consumers wouldn’t be able to tell you why it’s called Black Friday, yet buyers bear the cold and long lines to buy stuff.

In the 1950s, the Philadelphia police coined the phrase in reference to the terrible traffic jams caused by suburbanites coming into the city for shopping in the weekend after Thanksgiving.

I don’t understand the point of Black Friday.

What exactly is worth getting? What can be so important to buy that you didn’t get throughout the year?

I’ve seen some of the ads and I wasn’t really impressed. There isn’t anything I need nor want for myself or for the family.

But consumers will still buy things just to buy things. This year will be no different.

In recent years, the hottest items for the holidays have been electronics. Televisions, tablets and cameras are always advertised.

People will clamor to buy different electronic products but most of these are junk and not made to last.

They are sold to make the company a quick buck and they are used to get you in the door so that you can buy more things, like stocking stuffers.

I don’t think you really need that fourth television in the house, a DVD you’ll watch once or a new pair of slippers.

But that’s the problem with Americans and consumerism. We buy things out of impulse rather than out of necessity. It’s more quantity rather than quality.

We get caught up in the frenzy of the holidays but don’t realize there’s nothing special about Black Friday.

There are sales going on all the time, the whole year in fact. Sales happen on President’s Day, Memorial Day, Fourth of July and Labor Day.

Even Cyber Monday is a good time to buy electronics while conveniently at home.

Instead of just wasting money and time on Black Friday, I think money should be better off saved for a logical purchase.

Buy quality items with the money saved up. Buy items that actually hold some value.

Get the television that has more HDMI outlets and is actually a name brand.

Purchase real leather boots rather than pleather boots.

Buy items that you can be to own.
