Have you ever wondered if pick-up lines actually work?
Or if people still use pickup lines?
With Valentine’s Day just passing I noticed people flirting on campus, so much so that when I was heading to class a guy used a pick-up line that was so offensive that I wondered what the girl’s response would be.
Imagine my shock when she blushed and giggled back. So while going around campus I asked Delta College students what their most used pick-up lines were, or what they have used or have had used on them.
I got some typical pick-up lines, for example:
“Are your feet tired, because you’ve been running through my mind all day,” said Sam Rose Ramirez.
Or, “Guuurl, are you an angel? Because you fell from heaven,” offered Sal Martinez.
As I continued asking Delta College students I got more creative lines that had me wondering who had come up with such lines:
“Are you today’s date? Because you’re a 10 out of 10,” said Maria Martinez.
“If you were an Autobot you would be Optimus FINE,” answered Destiny Smith.
“ I will love you for the next ten years of my life, but then I will love another. She will call you mommy,” was William Marcelo’s contribution.
It wasn’t until getting responses such as, “Isn’t this school amazing? … Wow, you have nice eyes,” from Mary Del Toro, or “Do you know how much a polar bear weighs?… It’s enough to break the ice. Hi my name is…,” said William Marcelo.
I started to wonder if people even used pick-up lines anymore.
Forrest Takahashi and Genevieve Haring gave me an answer.
Takahashi told me his pickup will have to be “Hi” because to him there isn’t a better way to start a conversation than introducing yourself.
Haring told me she would tell a guy ,“You’re hot can I get your number?” or “Do you want to date me? Then date me.” She said that she had no time for saying or being told pick-up lines, that if you like someone you should just tell them.
Ralph Lanh and Bernardo Gonzalez had similar responses based on the situation. Lanh said if he was in the right situation he would say, “ Do you want to dance?“ while Lanh said “You look very nice today.”
Maybe pick-ups have met an end.
I don’t have much experience with pick-up lines but I agree with Takashi on how maybe introducing yourself is the best way to start a conversation.
Time wasted on pick-up lines could be better used getting to know the other person.
