The Mustangs were looking to continue the winning streak of seven of the team’s last eight games, but the Modesto Junior College Pirates plundered the Mustangs’ good fortune after a 10-2 beat down.
This game started off as a show of defense from both teams. Both starting pitchers combined for only a handful of hits through the first half of the game. Fielding also held out, with multiple balls being caught mid air by infielders and great coaching from both teams.
The game would be scoreless until the fifth with a home run by first baseman Blaine French that gave the Mustangs a 1-0 lead.
That’s where hope would be lost for the Mustangs as Modesto would go on to score five runs in the top of the sixth inning and take the lead 5-1 and would lead to two pitcher changes in that inning. After that the Pirates would never trail.
Although the Mustangs did score once more in the bottom of the sixth inning cutting the Pirates lead to 5-2, that would be the end for the Mustangs offense, as the Mustangs would be unable to rally a comeback, with the Mustangs failing to score from having bases loaded twice in the bottom of the sixth and seventh innings.
Until the ninth inning the game was still in reach for the Mustangs, only being down 5-2, but it seems the Mustangs defense got deja vu, as the Mustangs pitching again struggled and allowed five runs in a single inning again, all of which were by walks as the Mustangs pitchers allowed eight walks before finally closing the ninth inning.
