As San Joaquin Delta College’s Spring 2024 semester nears the halfway point, it’s time to look ahead to the upcoming summer classes.

Taking summer classes can be very helpful for students as it is recommended by many staff members around campus like counselors Diane Feneck.

“I would definitely recommend that students take summer classes. Why? Summer classes are a great opportunity to catch up, or get ahead in courses, which ultimately saves money. Additionally, getting ahead in courses allows students to complete their degree or transfer sooner. Taking summer courses also provides an opportunity to focus on a challenging subject. Keep in mind, however, summer courses are generally shorter, therefore, they are accelerated, meaning students are learning a semester worth of information in a shorter amount of time.” said Feneck.

Although the opening date to begin enrolling for courses is April 13, students can check which classes will be available on Delta College’s website. Looking forward will help students figure out which courses they will need to take for graduation or transferring to a University.

For newcomers at Delta College or undecided students, there are many courses available in order to get on track.

“For students who would like to decide on or clarify their major, I recommend Coun 30 (Career Self-Opportunity), and Coun 31 (Career Exploration),” said Feneck. “Coun 19 (Introduction to Counseling and Educational Planning) is also a great course for summer since it counts as Orientation and provides excellent information to help new students settle into college. Summer is also a great time to take general education courses, or major specific courses. Keep in mind that whatever courses a student chooses to take, summer sessions are faster, so students should be sure to pace themselves to ensure they pass their classes.”

But for some students, summer can be a great opportunity for students to take a mental break after a long year of studying and many assignments, like Jeremiah Varao, a second year student here at Delta.

“I do not plan on taking any summer classes this summer because I need to take a mental break from school for a bit and focus on things outside of school.” Varao says.

Although Varao does says he deems that summer courses are rewarding, “I believe summer classes are super beneficial because students would be given an opportunity to finish classes at a faster pace which would get many students into a desired career or even in my case, into a nursing school faster,” said Varao.
