When it comes to being a student at Delta College and choosing courses  it can be stressful trying to figure which classes to take to fulfill award and degree requirements.

Delta offers different general education plans which are CSU, IGETC, UC, Delta’s local pattern and HBCU

For myself I went with delta’s local pattern which requires 27 units all together for the seven areas.

Students need to take a variety of classes across the different areas, which as of 2022 also includes Ethnic Studies courses.

As a student who is working on finishing a third degree  and a few certificates, I feel like I can offer my opinion on which of the classes.

Here is a list of classes that I’m recommending for you to take outside of the typical requirements (English 1A, for example, is a class nearly all students if not all take..)

I enjoyed the following classes:

Area 1 Language and Rationality:

  • 1A: English Composition 1A or 2A: The 2A class provided extra support that I found helpful.
  • 1B: Mathematics– Psych 2 stats. The class was very understanding for me and I dislike math.

Area 2 Natural Sciences:

  • Plant 14 Soil Science- I always love planting plants and it gives more insight on the different types of soils.

Area 3 Humanities:

  • Music 8 Exploring Jazz, Ragtime and Blues. I’ve always enjoyed jazz music and this class talked about a lot of musicians, different types of instruments, and also watched videos of different jazz singers.
  • Religion 14A & B- I’ve always been open to learning about different religions.

Area 4 American Institutions:

  • History 30B African American History- I enjoyed learning about the past and what people like me went through.

Area 5 Social and Behavioral Science:

  • Psych 1 Intro to Psychology- In this class it taught me about different philosophers, how the brain works and the different studies of psychology.

Area 6 Lifelong Learning and Self-Development:

  • FCS 2 Life Management- This class gave advice on money management, suggestions on how you set your goals and how to manage your stress.
  • FCS 6 Nutrition- This class taught me about how to eat better, the different types of food that’s good and bad and what are the good and bad fats.

This pathway made it possible for me to graduate in May of 2023 with a GPA of 3.6.

With these classes I was able to remain focused, engaged, and enthusiastic with being enjoyable and wanting to learn more.
