The Delta College Women’s Basketball team continued its strong start to the 2025 season with a 72-54 win over Folsom Lake College. With a crowd that filled at least two to three rows the atmosphere was electric as fans from both teams cheered on their squads.
Despite entering the game as the underdogs ranked 10th in the state compared to Folsom Lake’s No. 5 ranking, Delta proved to be the dominant team in key areas, mostly rebounds and turnovers.
The Mustangs outrebounded the Falcons by 11 and forced Folsom Lake into 30 turnovers double the number Delta committed.
This advantage in the paint was crucial, as Delta was able to limit Folsom Lake’s second chance opportunities and gain more possessions, which fueled their offense throughout the game.
Plus their relentless defensive pressure had kept Folsom Lake on their back foot, never allowing them to establish any real rhythm on offense even tho they were having a much better shooting night the Mustangs.
Delta’s ability to capitalize on these mistakes, turning them into fast-break points and easy baskets, was a key factor in the team’s success.
The Mustangs dominated the contest. Kiara Council was the standout player for the Mustangs, leading the team with 19 points, seven steals, and four assists Council played 33 minutes showing impressive hustle and leadership. Also, with standout performances from Fajr Cuthbertson (13 points), Aaliyah Youngblood (11 points) , and Grace Brown was a force on both ends contributing 10 points and eight rebounds, providing the Mustangs with the necessary presence in the paint.
Brown’s ability to secure rebounds and finish strong in the post helped stretch the lead for Delta as the game progressed.
A big moment came in the third quarter when she turned the ball over, then immediately recovered with a steal that set up a wide-open three-pointer for her team. A play that summed up the team’s relentless energy for the entire night.
The victory which marks Delta’s 17th win of the season this year further solidifies their position as one of the best teams in the state.
The Mustang’s ability to outplay a higher-ranked opponent speaks volumes about their potential and work ethic as they move deeper into the season. As they continue to build momentum heading towards the playoffs.
The Mustangs will look to carry this performance forward into future games with a focus on maintaining their defensive intensity and balanced offensive play.
