A Feb. 26 fire above the Holt welding shop was caused by a filter unit, according to Delta officials. An error in the Mustang Alert! system that prevented a campuswide alert from being sent to the app has also been fixed.
The fire started from a filter in a fume hood on an HVAC unit that was installed during renovations to the building in 2018.
“It was a filter unit for one of the fume hoods that are above the welding stations. The fume hoods provide ventilation to make sure we aren’t releasing metal particles into the air. So only the filter section was involved in the fire, not the entire AC unit,” said Delta College Public Information Officer Alex Breitler.
The fire was quickly put out, however the shop is not to be used for the next couple of weeks.
The Mustang Alert! system also encountered errors notifying users through the app. Although the system sent out two emails — the initial alert and the all clear — but neither were sent as alerts through the app.

“I don’t have a lot of details on that but am told that because we are transitioning to a new app, a configuration needed to be made to send the notification,” said Breitler.
Delta College used to use the Rave Alert system in order to alert of on-campus issues but switched to Mustang Alert! In December of 2024.
