No. 25 Alex Perasso makes a shot over Folsom Lake Falcons in the first half on Jan. 21.

Unfortunately, with the summer semester on the horizon, basketball season is ending for both the men’s and women’s teams.

Our men’s team finished the season 8-20, eighth in the Big 8 conference, averaging around 67 points per game.

Point guard No. 12 Donovan Saiyad averaged 9 points a game with three assists a game in the season. Center No. 23 Dwight Strickland shot 50 percent for the season, averaging 6 points with 10 rebounds.

The Mustangs beat the Folsom Lake Falcons 80-74 in their last game. No. 25 Alex Perasso led the way with 20 points and 10 rebounds, finishing 4-12 in conference play.

Our women’s team finished the season 21-8, winning the Big 8 conference, averaging 73 points per game as a team.

Guards No. 10 Fajr Cuthbertson and No. 2 Aaliyah Youngblood led the team in scoring, averaging around 12 points per game. No. 1 Kiara Council led the team in assists, averaging 3.4 per game.

They all made first team all conference with No. 0 Kathreen Noa and No. 25 Isabella Azzolino being honorable mentions.

Hall of Fame head Coach Gina Johnson continued her success at Delta, winning the conference in back-to-back years.

In the NorCal Regionals, the Mustangs are the number 2 seed and went up against number 18 San Mateo at home.

Due to it being the playoffs, there was a $12 admission fee, and they only accepted cash.

The Mustangs won the game 70-51 to advance to round three.

They played amazing defense throughout the game, holding San Mateo to only 35 percent shooting and holding San Mateo to only 7 points in the 2nd and 3rd quarters.

The leading scorer was Kiara Council with 16 points shooting an exceptional 67 percent shooting. Youngblood also contributed, having 14 points and 5 steals.

The Mustangs will attempt to continue their amazing season on Saturday, March 8, when they play San Francisco Community College.
