THE COLLEGIAN
The Collegian is the student newspaper and news website of San Joaquin Delta College in Stockton, Calif. The paper is published five to six times a semester. As a First Amendment newspaper we pride ourselves on a commitment to the students of Delta College while maintaining independence. We reinvigorate the credo that the newspaper speaks for the students, checks abuses of power and stands vigilant in the protection of democracy and free speech.

Our students focus on audio/video production and content creation. We are an award-winning (2023 and 2024 Best Broadcast News Program- two-year college category by Associated Collegiate Press). We are an instructional program offering an Associate of Arts degree, certificates of completion, and non-credit certificates. DMEDIA emphasizes experiential learning to build student portfolios whether transferring or going into the workforce.

Associate of Arts for Transfer
in Journalism
The Associate in Arts for Transfer degree in Journalism is designed for students planning to transfer to a California State University (CSU) with a major in Journalism. Journalism is the study of writing, video, radio, multimedia and social media to disseminate news and relevant information to the masses. Courses in journalism provide students with higher-order cognitive skills, including decision-making and critical thinking, verbal skills through interviewing, written skills through use of newswriting techniques, use of tone, multitasking, deadline management and teamwork as members of a news staff. Jobs in the field include: journalist, multimedia producer, editor, writer, technical writer, page designer, copyeditor, social media specialist, content producer, news service writer, newsletter editor, public relations representative and photojournalist. The completion of this degree ensures preparation for upper-division coursework for students seeking to transfer and pursue a baccalaureate degree in Journalism from a California State University (CSU).
Program Learning Outcomes
Upon successful completion of this program, students will be able to:
- Use judgment to determine best course of action in reporting, as well as newsworthiness to effectively purvey information to the masses.
- Understand the ethical and legal involved in producing multimedia news content.
- Accurately report and write a variety of stories in journalistic style.
- Act as multimedia journalists, producing content across mediums.

Associated of Arts in Digital Media
The Associate in Arts degree in Digital Media is designed to provide students with knowledge in content creation, editing, and delivery to work in an evolving media landscape. Focus starts on building entry-level job skills in audio and video capture, non-linear editing, and delivery. Coursework includes practical, hands-on knowledge in media live and on-demand media environments. Students earning a degree in Digital Media will explore concepts related to effective content production across various platforms, including broadcast, online, and social media. Students will work in a manner mirroring industry standards, with focus on immediate professional application.
Program Learning Outcomes
Upon successful completion of this program, students will be able to:
- Understand the role of content selection as it relates to the spread of media, specifically the choice of one medium over another.
- Understand the role and value of broadcast media (terrestrial, online, social media) in relation to the dissemination of information and the public’s right to know.
- Demonstrate knowledge of media environments, specifically the techniques and trade requirements necessary to produce and distribute content in a physical space and on location.
- Demonstrate basic skills in non-linear digital media editing.
- Demonstrate technical skill competency in live and on-demand media environments.
