During the 2024-2025 school year Collegian staff members involved with Fierce Mustang Media will be involved in a community-wide media and information literacy campaign funded with an Impact Grant from the California Teachers Association Institute for Teaching.
Students researched, report, and create content related to how San Joaquin County residents can better understand the media messages they see every day.
The project was intended to be completed in a one-year cycle, but over the course of the work students and faculty involved noted a larger need to continue the work. One of the pushes to do so came at the March 2025 Associated Collegiate Press national conference in Long Beach, Calif. where again and again it was noted that media and information literacy was more critical than ever.

The project produced more than 10 creatives for the community, including:
- Media Literacy Guide
- Media literacy fliers
- Curriculum for K-12 presentations
- Slide decks for K-12 presentations
- Activity sheets for K-8 presentations
These materials are all avaliable for download at fiercemustangmedia.com/media-decoded.
This page represents a sampling of the project. For more information about Collegian’s part in this media and information literacy effort, email deltacollegian@gmail.com.

Work in Review
During the 2024-2025 school year, students working the project became Media Literacy Researchers and Media Literacy Ambassadors. They created the four-step process to take out into the community.
As part of this effort, student journalists helped table at six public events, including:
- Fierce’s Fall Fest in CTE Land
- Dinner and Democracy
- Delta College Digital Media Film Festival
- Pulitzer on the Road
- Student Press Freedom Day
- Arts & Multimedia TrAC Extravaganza
The total reach of these events was more than 7,000 people. Through these events students were able to obtain 350 pledge cards from people vowing to be more media literate consumers.
Work will continue into the 2025-2026 school year.
