Delta College announced in early July students with a record of vaccination will have free access to textbooks in order to financially help students while also increasing the rates of vaccinated individuals.
According to Alex Breitler, Director of Marketing and Communications at Delta College, more than 4,200 students have since registered to obtain access to free textbooks.
“I can tell you that as of today, free textbook referrals have gone out to 4,284 students and we continue to receive new requests,” said Breitler.
Delta student Hco D’pooh received almost $1,300 worth of free books through the program.
“Means a lot to me and I am very thankful for textbook incentives. If there was no incentive, I would have to pay this out of my pocket,” said D’pooh.
The registration process requires students to first complete the student vaccine submission form and receive approval from Delta college officials. Once approved, students can then head over to the bookstore to claim their textbooks, free of charge.
One key note is that it’s not too late for students to apply for the program. Students that have already purchased books can still get reimbursed after receiving the COVID-19 vaccine and receiving approval of their student vaccine submission form.
The program has received some backlash. Social media users have voiced displeasure on Delta College channels, including Facebook and Instagram.
Breitler said he hopes to share the experience of students who have gone through with students who are on the fence.
Students who have been vaccinated and are registered with the program are encouraged to send short testimonials with selfie photos or a video about the experience. Delta will share testimonials on the school’s social media platforms in an effort to try and reach other students.
“We think it might be helpful for those who have concerns about vaccinations to hear from their peers about what it was like and why it’s important,” said Breitler.
