Most students may be at home for the summer but the work doesn’t stop on campus. On June 6, the Board of Trustees held a board retreat to discuss ongoing work during the school break.
Updates to food services and progress on Measure K projects were key points of discussion during presentations by Associate Vice President of Bond Programs Daniel Banowetz.
Food Services
Food services projects include a bakery renovation on the third floor of Shima and updates for Danner Hall.
The bakery project is scheduled for opening bids June 25, with the goal to have the project approved by July 20 and construction finished in October.
The project consists of a new oven for the bakery classrooms as well as updates to the bakery preparation room including specialized equipment, new sinks counter tops and a walk-in refrigerator and freezer.
Planned changes in Danner consist of adding a deli, a pizza and bakery area, ramen bar and a coffee bar in the gaming area. Along with the new additions there will be updates to the coffee and drinks area in Danner and the Mustang Grill.
For the food services improvements a consultant was hired, as well as NJA Architecture. Delta is planning meetings with stakeholder groups including the Associated Students of Delta College (ASDC).
Three mockups were shared at the board meeting, which do not show the gamer area in them. However, in a follow up interview Banowetz assured that the gamer area will remain.
“What was shown were just some ideas,” said Banowitz. “That’s one of those projects where it’s still early in the project and they still need to do meetings with stakeholders.”
Related to these changes, the board approved the hire of Howard Banks as the director of Food Services at its June 16 meeting.
Measure K Update
Measure K includes an energy efficiency project, updates to the South Campus at Mountain House and a public safety training center for Delta’s Peace Officer Standards and Training (POST) Academy.
The energy efficiency project will consist of placing solar panels above several parking lots on campus, starting with Locke 3 during the summer.
Construction is starting June 29 with a groundbreaking ceremony on June 30, and is planned to be finished and reopened Aug. 13.
The Mountain House project is adding a programming building and will require a request for qualifications as well as a design build team which will have details finalized in a meeting with Dr. Pablo Ortega, the dean for the Mountain House campus.
The goal for the Mountain House project is to make it feel like its own campus.
““Everything that should be at a campus will be in that building,” said Branowitz.
The Public Safety Training Center will serve as a training center and classrooms for Delta College’s POST academy. The facilities will consist of classroom buildings, an Emergency Vehicle Operations Course (EVOC) pad and a shooting range. The Post Academy currently uses the Stockton Police Department ranges for cadet training.
The board is considering three locations for the facility: 5288 W. Kile Road in Lodi, 22050 Buena Vista Road in Clements, or 18846 N. Highway 99 in Lodi.
