Aly Montez shines light on photography techniques
Aly Montez, creative lighting photography artist, conducted an RTV workshop on Tuesday, 18 Sept. 2018 from 3 to 3:40 p.m. in the San Joaquin Delta College Radio and Television room, located Shima 146.
All of Delta College’s workshops are free. Anyone can attend, students and non-students.
This workshop was guided by a self-taught creative lighting artist, Aly Montez. Teaching Delta College students the basic techniques of lighting and how to manipulate colors into lighting. Aly starts off by giving examples of the type of work she does.
“I do some traditional stuff but my main focus is creative,” said Montez.
She brought in some of her most used equipment and showed the students how to direct light on the model to create shadows along the face.
Throughout the workshop, Aly shows the students the best equipment to use and the different types of effects each light source creates. She gave examples on the meaning of her work and how she used light manipulation and color psychology to give a deeper meaning and effect into her work.
“As a photographer allow yourself to step back and take a moment to think about what you’re trying to get across… do you want to give your audience a hint of what your photo means or do you want to leave it to be completely subjective,” said Montez. She continues on to explaining the meanings of the colors in her photo. “Green is the symbol for growth, trust, wisdom, loyalty, confidence, and intelligence…then the pink is to show gentleness.”
Aly like many other people come to Delta every so often to give workshops and teach students techniques and ways to improve their skills.
Workshops like these that include people from Stockton who are making a living from what they love to do, is what gives Delta students like me, motivation and a positive mindset for our future after graduation.
