Summer is right around the corner and no matter who you are you want to feel your best. Best put by Megan thee Stallion (potential ASDC candidate) back in 2019, we want a hot girl summer — but sometimes our wallet does not agree with our aspirations. So here is a list of some things that may assist in your hot girl endeavors this summer.
Clothing
Rotating your wardrobe is a financial hassle but it doesn’t have to be if you know where to look.
- Thrifting recently repopularized the thrift can be overwhelming and some places may over exercise their pricing. But with a little patience and a buddy this can be a fun endeavor. However if you’re not the patient type I would highly recommend checking out Ambition Vintage.
Ambition is a queer-owned business with two locations: one in Modesto and the other in Merced. The Modesto store often has great deals sporadically throughout the year but if you follow their instagram . But if you find yourself in Merced that store is $20 or less year round, they also have a student discount with a valid student ID.
- Student Beans is a website that tracks down all the student discounts you could ever imagine from clothes to travel they have you covered. The discounts for clothing range from 10-25 percent off so the prices can vary greatly depending on where you choose to shop. https://www.studentbeans.com/us
Wellness
If getting in shape is your plan for the summer you got this but make sure not to strain yourself or your wallet.
- Planet Fitness offers a summer pass for teenagers so those who are 14-19 can work out free of charge. Those who qualify are free to workout from the June 1st- Aug. 31.
- For those over 19 unfortunately the options are limited however Crunch offers a week free with a $1 sign up fee.
Membership prices vary cheapest starting at $9.99 which can only be used at one location and the highest $34.99.
- While some locations of franchised gyms offer a student discount none of the locations contacted by the Collegian in the area had one available.
Beauty and Self Care
Feeling and looking your best go hand in hand, not for vanity’s sake but because it’s nice to treat yourself on a budget.
- At-home facials are always fun. You can buy a sheet mask or try making a more cost effective version yourself with ingredients you might have at home.
Oatmeal and honey mask: a secret passed down to me by my aunt it is 3 tbsp of oatmeal (you can blend it if you choose just depends on your texture preferences), a tbsp of honey and about ¼ cup hot water stir and let it sit until absorbed by oatmeal or when you are not bothered by the heat. To test, put a small amount on your palm and test the warmth before applying to face.
Aloe vera mask: most likely growing in yours or a friend’s backyard aloe has many soothing and hydrating properties that can help with acne or dry skiing. Just cut a small bit of the aloe leaf you’ve obtained and remove the green. You will be left with the clear substance inside the aloe, throw that in a blender and add a small amount of turmeric if you have it then blend. Apply to the face and if you have extra you can freeze and use it as cubes to help depuff in the morning.
- Lash clusters a friend if getting your lashes done is not in the budget that month. Though not as long-lasting as professional grade extensions, drug store lash kits can run you $19 to $35. Though it’s a bit of a learning curve, application-wise, after the first few tries it’s a cakewalk.
