Several days of downpour wasn’t going to stop a fiesta from happening on April 3 in the Quad.
The sun popped out just in time to shine some light on the “Taco’s for Scholarships” event hosted by the La Raza Employees Association (LREA).
Michelaguas catering company brought its own special flavor to the day and provided food and services to those eagerly waiting in line. Michelaguas Owner Karen Manzo worked hard behind the grill serving up the delicious eats of the day with her fierce energy and focus to keep churning out quality food.
Plates cost $12 and came with two chicken tacos, two beef tacos, and a soft drink.
“So all of it is pretty much going to the foundation for the scholarships for support of students- all types of students,” said LREA Secretary Vanessa Plaza. “The sales have been pretty steady, so until we run out, I think we will be running out today.”
Plans to originally host the event the Tuesday before were shut down by heavy rain, LREA made necessary adjustments and moved the event to Thursday.
“It was smooth rescheduling for Thursday. It was just pivot, that’s what La Reza does. We pivot and then we pick up. It’s a wonderful group of individuals here at Delta College that pulls it together, so that’s what is it,” said La Reza’s Tina Leal, Resource Specialist for The Dreamers Center and member of LREA.
It was a day not only filled with fun, food, and friends, but was a day that also served up the opportunity to financially contribute to the variety of scholarships offered to students attending Delta College.
“The past few years, we’ve decided to give out about $350 scholarships- ten of them. So, we’re trying to refill the piggy bank so we can have enough money for every year supporting the students. We know that it makes a big difference just because books are expensive, supplies are expensive, gas prices,” said Claudia Navarro, administrative assistant for Access and Equity.
LREA’s work has been to give students a successful educational journey by providing resources as well as funding and providing various support networks. The support offered ranges from scholarships, employment opportunities, academic advising, and building community through hosting a series of events.
“The reason our association broke it up to having the ten scholarships rather than three of five is because when students transfer from Delta College and they show on that transfer they were awarded scholarships, it speaks volumes. So, that’s what we’re here doing,” added Leal.
Students who are interested in applying for scholarships will need to visit SJDC’s Financial Aid webpage where a link is posted and will take you directly to the application. The information required from the student will need to be filled out to confirm whether the applicant qualifies for offered support.
