In Spring 2023, San Joaquin Delta College conducted a Campus Climate Survey of 527 employees and 1,580 students. Targeted focus groups were also convened with historically underrepresented groups of employees and students in an effort to “better understand their unique experiences on the Delta campus.”
The survey results looked at the following areas specifically for students:
- Basic Needs
- Safety
- Health and Wellness
- Diversity, Equity, and Inclusion
Stories from Collegian staff members in the Fall 2023 and Spring 2024 semesters were completed as part of the Delta College Equity Honors Program. The reporting project asked students to read and examine the Campus Survey and explain its findings to the student population. The stories were published in the printed version of The Collegian and online.

WHAT IS THE CAMPUS CLIMATE SURVEY?
The Campus Climate Survey was conducted in the Spring 2023 semester to gauge student and employee perceptions of Delta College and its environment.
Questions asked were broken down into the four areas noted above, as well as Employee Professional Development and Flexible Work Scheduling. Collegian did not address the one employee specific area in its reporting.
The RP Group, which built and analyzed the survey for Delta College, recommended the following (in verbatim):
- Develop a plan to consider, prioritize, and implement student and employee suggestions.
- Work collaboratively with Delta College’s Campus Police Department (DCCPD) to establish and maintain a community-oriented approach to safety.
- Facilitate healthy habits and boundaries for work/life balance for students and employees.
- Actualize strategies rooted in diversity, equity, and inclusion in an effort to enhance and improve the Delta experience for students and employees.
The Collegian will continue to report on Campus Climate Survey related stories in the Spring 2024 semester.
