On Oct. 31, the Mustangs soccer team took on Sacramento City College at home, tying the last home game, making the team undefeated on home turf all season.

The Mustangs played the game aggressively with the kickoff, forcing Sac City to defend.

Seven minutes into the match, the Mustangs received a penalty, giving Sac City a direct free kick, allowing the team to score the goal against the Mustangs.

With Delta behind by one, Sacramento took advantage of the situation and came back stronger and more motivated, scoring another goal within the following two minutes, bringing the score to 0-2.

The Mustangs received the ball on the opposition team’s side of the field, resulting in a corner kick against Sacramento. No. 4, Madeleine Iniguez, took the Mustangs’ corner kick, missed her shot, denying her side a chance to score, resulting in another disadvantage.

The Mustangs attempted numerous shots on Sac City’s goalie, but the Panthers scored a third goal of the game in the final twenty minutes of the first half, making the score 0-3.

Sacramento  started the ball in the second half, prompting the Mustangs to defend with greater determination than ever before

In the first 20 minutes of the second half, No. 12, Alyssa Wilright, assisted her teammate, No. 4, Madeleine Iniguez, to the Mustangs’  first goal of the game.

“I play defense, so going into the second half playing forward was a different mindset, but being able to score and having assists in the second half really proved to me and my team that we should just never give up, and it’s all mentality, and you put your mind to it, you can do it. It’s just all just grit and mentality to be honest. I think scoring the first goal really pumped everybody up, and I’m very grateful for that. We were able to get that win, and we were undefeated at home,” Iniguez said.

The Panthers became frustrated because of the Mustangs’ goal, resulting in playing dirty and rough, causing No. 5 Bianca Shelton to take a hard fall, which rallied the Mustangs to up their game.

In the last 10  minutes, No. 4 Iniguez assisted No. 15, Samantha Arong, for a second goal of the game, bringing the score to 2-3.

With two minutes left on the clock, the Delta College Mustangs gathered all of the remaining energy, pulling goalie, No. 00, Elaynna Flores, to the halfway line (or midfield line), far outside of the goalie’s box, allowing her to pass the ball toArong, who assisted No. 10, Sophia Magdaleno in one of the biggest comebacks, tying the game and a season undefeated on home turf at 3-3.

“You know, they got down early, gave up some goals in the first ten minutes and being down 3-0 was really hard, but for them to continue to fight and find a way to create three goal opportunities to tie the game in the last five minutes of the game speaks volumes to their ability to be relentless and work until the final second in order to remain undefeated at home. So I’m really, really proud of them,” said Head Coach Adrienne Sorenson.

Their next game was at Sierra on Nov. 04 at 3 pm, with No. 12, Alyssa Wilright scoring one goal, having the final score be 1-2, with Delta College losing their last game before the first round conference tournament.
