This season Delta Women’s Volley Head Coach Molly Hummel entered her 25th year of coaching at Delta. During that time, she has received numerous awards, including being named NorCal Coach of the Year three times, five-time Big 8 Coach of the Year, and one-time American Volleyball Coaches Association Western Regional Coach of the Year.
In the last three seasons, Molly has led her team to impressive records and milestones, such as in 2022, when Delta finished with a 26-4 record while earning a trip to the State Final Four, then finishing a third place in California.
Currently, Delta is sitting at a season record of 29-1, including a 16-0 conference record.
On Nov. 25, Delta beat Reedley College in the NorCal Regional 3-0, bringing Hummel to a milestone of 300 all-time wins as Delta’s head coach.
Hummel describes the love she felt for volleyball from a young age.
“So I started playing in 7th grade I was a competitive soccer player and I decide to play volleyball because somebody talked me into it cause I was tall and so I immediately fell in love with the game and then I added up not playing soccer and I played volleyball all the way through college and I went to UOP and played there for four years and then I started coaching in 2005, so I love this game at a very young age,” said Hummel.
Hummel then spoke about how she describes her personality as a coach and its immediate impact on the court.
“We talk a lot about gratitude, discipline and trust, so I think from, like, a coaching standpoint, I put a lot of emphasis on being grateful for opportunities, trusting the process and being disciplined while we’re doing it,” said Hummel.
No. 5 Morgan Lung describes how Molly is such a good coach and in a way a mentor to her.
“I learned so much from Molly a great part about her is that she always knows how to bring us together in tough moments she always knows exactly what to say and to fire us up whenever were down she knows how to communicate with us in order to get through to us without us shutting down she’s really good at telling us exactly what we need to do and she always 100 percent got our backs,” said Lung.
