Slumps: Defeat your grades, not yourself

The spring semester is coming to a close, and while many students are focused on ending it strong, it may not be so easy for some. After nearly an entire school year of stress and chaos, some students may already be calling it quits.

Some things are out of your control, but at the same time, it is your responsibility to make sure you finish what you started, instead of slipping from your end goal– whether that’s graduating strong, improving your GPA or simply working towards earning 60 units to get into a 4-year college.

So, how do you find your way out of a slump?

“I would try to study harder and ask the teacher for more advice on what to do, and finish faster,” said Delta student Priscila Demetrio.

I believe that knowing that you’re not alone and that accepting help goes a long way in helping you with just about anything other than assignments, exams and especially outside of school, it could help you accept help before it’s too late.

People often need breaks to refresh their minds and bodies, but it’s one thing to rest and it’s another thing to slack off from what needs to be done. That doesn’t mean that you’re alone in this. A lot of people are willing to help you at Delta.

If you’re not comfortable calling certain hotlines, there are always counselors at Delta that you can talk to about depression, anxiety/stress, family difficulties and more personal things you would like to talk to them about.

The types of services that Delta provides is UWill that includes confidential online mental health services to students.

Delta student Uzaif Ali offered advice to current students struggling to make it past the current semester.

“If you’re struggling with mental health issues, find someone that you can trust to talk to and try to get a schedule going for your assignments and time management, and if you don’t have any time, talk to your professor or counselors to see what you could do about all that stuff,” said Ali.

I myself get frustrated at times and get really discouraged about certain aspects of classes and even school, for the most part, but realizing that as long as I give 100 percent of my effort to whatever I’m doing, I’d count that as a win because as long as I try, it feels better than if I wasn’t.

So, how do you find your way out of a slump?

“I would try to study harder and ask the teacher for more advice on what to do, and finish faster,” said Demetrio.

This semester is almost over, and despite it being a crazy one, all of us still have to find ways to keep moving forward and not look back if we want to be one step closer to our goals. Like the late Kobe Bryant said: “Job’s not finished.”
